Supporting Rubber Smallholders deliver sustainable rubber

The PEFC Chain of Custody (CoC) Due Diligence System (DDS) provides essential support for rubber smallholders, helping them meet the requirements of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and achieve sustainable, deforestation-free practices.

By adhering to the PEFC EUDR DDS, rubber smallholders can enhance their marketability in the European Union and other regions with stringent deforestation regulations. The system ensures that rubber products are traceable and compliant with EUDR requirements, making them more attractive to international buyers who prioritize sustainable sourcing. This access to global markets can increase income opportunities and support the economic stability of smallholder farmers.

1. Ensuring Compliance with EUDR Standards

The PEFC EUDR DDS provides a structured framework for rubber smallholders to verify that their production practices meet the EUDR standards. This includes ensuring that rubber is sourced from areas free of deforestation or forest degradation since December 31, 2020. The system helps smallholders understand and implement these requirements, reducing the risk of non-compliance and potential market exclusion.

2. Improving Traceability and Documentation

The DDS emphasizes traceability, which involves maintaining detailed records of the rubber supply chain from harvest to market. For smallholders, this means establishing and maintaining robust documentation practices. The PEFC EUDR DDS supports this process by providing guidelines and tools to track rubber production, manage supply chain data, and ensure transparency. Improved traceability can also enhance the credibility and reliability of smallholders’ products.

3. Supporting Sustainable Practices

The PEFC EUDR DDS encourages and supports the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices among rubber smallholders. By providing access to best practices, training, and resources, the system helps smallholders implement methods that minimize environmental impact, conserve biodiversity, and enhance soil health. This support not only helps meet EUDR requirements but also contributes to the long-term sustainability of rubber farming.Video here

4. Offering Risk Assessment and Mitigation Strategies

Risk assessment is a key component of the PEFC EUDR DDS. For rubber smallholders, this means identifying potential risks related to deforestation or unsustainable practices in their supply chains. The system provides tools and methodologies for assessing these risks and developing effective mitigation strategies. This proactive approach helps smallholders address potential issues before they become compliance problems, ensuring a more secure and resilient supply chain.

5. Enhancing Capacity Building and Training for Smallholder rubber farmers

To successfully implement the PEFC EUDR DDS, rubber smallholders may need additional training and support. The system offers capacity-building initiatives, including workshops, technical assistance, and resources to educate smallholders about EUDR requirements, sustainable practices, and traceability. Empowering smallholders with knowledge and skills helps them meet regulatory standards and improve their overall production practices.

In addition to meeting EUDR requirements, rubber smallholders can benefit from certification opportunities provided by the PEFC system. Certification can enhance the market value of their products and provide access to fair trade markets. PEFC EUDR DDS helps smallholders navigate the certification process and achieve recognized standards for sustainability and quality.

6. Fostering Collaboration and Partnerships

The PEFC EUDR DDS encourages collaboration among stakeholders in the rubber supply chain, including smallholders, processors, and traders. By fostering partnerships and information sharing, the system supports a more integrated and efficient supply chain. Collaboration can lead to shared resources, knowledge exchange, and collective efforts to address common challenges related to deforestation and sustainability.

In summary, the PEFC Chain of Custody Due Diligence System offers significant support to rubber smallholders by enhancing market access, ensuring compliance with EUDR standards, improving traceability, promoting sustainable practices, and providing training and certification opportunities. By integrating these elements, smallholders can strengthen their position in the global market, contribute to environmental conservation, and achieve long-term sustainability in their rubber production practices.
