However, the benefits of certification extend far beyond this: certification can also improve the working and living conditions of rubber tappers too. We spoke to three full-time rubber tappers, who are employed by Southland Rubber, about how PEFC certification had helped to improve their day-to-day working and living conditions.

We use natural rubber every day, and often we don’t notice it. When we work. When we travel. When we relax. When we celebrate. We use natural rubber. However the growing demand for natural rubber, and the intensified expansion of monoculture rubber plantations - mostly across Southeast Asia - brings with it a host of complex environmental, economic, and social challenges, particularly for rubber smallholders. The sustainable management of the land and forests from which rubber is harvested will be essential to ensuring that we can meet future demand, in a way that empowers rubber smallholders and protects the future of our forests.
